Finish FAQ's:
What is the difference between "natural brass" and "lacquered brass"? Both natural and lacquered brass are made with the same brass materials, and finished with a hand-brushed method which gives it a unique character. It is the nature of brass to "patina", or darken as oxidization builds up on the surface of the metal over time. This results in an aged brass look, where the metal will turn from it's bright gold "new" state to a darker orangish hue, and eventually to a bronze brown tone with possible green areas. On the Natural Brass finish, the light comes to you in it's newly cleaned and bright gold state but will quickly begin to darken as the patina process takes place. If a lacquer is applied to the surface of the brass immediately after cleaning, this patia process is inhibited by blocking the oxygen from reaching the metal, resulting in the brass staying in the "new" bright gold state. Please note that even when a lacquer is applied, it is difficult to fight nature. Some slight darkening may still be visible on the brass.
Is lacquered brass shiny? We use a semi-gloss sheen lacquer on the lacquered brass finish, which gives it a slight shine. It is not as shiny as a polished brass finish, however.
Is the Semi-Gloss Black finish shiny? Compared to the Matte, yes. The semi-gloss lacquer used to seal this finish will have a slightly shiny sheen.
Why would I choose the brass over the steel base metal? While steel is less expensive, brass will last forever, even in humid areas such as bathrooms. Brass does not corrode or wear down over time. Patina on brass and copper does not wear away at the metal the same way that rust on steel does. While our steel fixtures are sealed with an acrylic sealer to protect them from rust and corrosion, over time this may weaken and small areas of rust may develop, at which point a re-sealing with an acrylic spray is recommended. Used indoors however, the steel versions will last for many years and may never need a re-seal, it simply depends on the environmental conditions. The only area where we highly recommend using the brass base metal is in a bathroom in close proximity to the shower, as fixtures here are exposed to moisture on a regular basis.
